It started as an Instagram (@museenyc) and it's turning into this: a place where the recommendations don't disappear into a feed after 24 hours. Everything here is curated by hand. Nobody pays to be included.

Why we bother

Because we love this city. Not in a postcard way. We mean the way where you turn a corner you've turned a hundred times and something is different. New York never sits still. A block changes between visits, a whole neighborhood changes between years, and nowhere here looks like the place two stops away.

The beauty is at both ends of the lens. Wide: the bridges, the skyline from a pier at golden hour, the park in October. Tight: a cracked mosaic in a subway station, a hand-painted sign nobody has repainted since 1978, a stoop, an alley, a door. Both are worth stopping for.

That's the idea behind the name. New York is a museum you live in, except the collection changes, admission is one subway tap, and half of it isn't labeled. It's made of everyone who turned up here from everywhere else, which is why you can eat, hear and see something genuinely new every week and still not get through it.

You cannot run out of places to get lost in this city. We've been trying for years.

Why everything here scores so well

Fair question, and the answer is the whole method: this is an ultra-filtered list. New York has tens of thousands of places to eat, drink and go — we see a great many of them and post a fraction. Somewhere that merely disappoints doesn't get a bad write-up here; it gets left out. Our tolerance is high on the way in, which is exactly why the scores run high once something makes it.

So read the numbers as a ranking among things already worth your time, not as a curve across the whole city. An 8.5 here is not a warning — it's still a place we're sending you to.

If you live here

You already know your six blocks. This is for the other 300 square miles — the room worth crossing the bridge for, the basement gallery in Chinatown, the pier that beats the rooftop charging for the same view.

If you're visiting

We're glad you're coming, and we want you to have a great time here. You get exactly what we'd tell a friend flying in next week: where to go, when to go, what to skip, and the honest warning about the places that charge a lot for very little.

Nobody should spend their one week in New York eating a mediocre dinner because a sign was big enough. Ask us anything before you come. We answer every email, and there's no such thing as a question that's too basic.

Which is also why we're blunt about the touristy places: the ones with no soul, built to take money from people who don't know the difference yet. That's not a knock on you. It's a knock on them, and the reason we'll always tell you where the real thing is instead.

And you don't have to do New York like a local to do it well. See the famous things if you want to see them: the view, the bridge, the museum everyone names. We'll just tell you the best time to go, and what's around the corner that nobody mentions.

What's free and what isn't

Everything written on this site is free: every guide, every review, every self-guided tour.The only things we charge for are custom trip planning and in-person guided tours.

If you want a trip planned around your own dates and interests, or a licensed guide with you for a day, those are services you can book. Everything else stays open to read, and paying for a service doesn't change what we recommend.
