How this is made

Everything here was written, photographed and built by us. This page says what isn't ours, and under what terms we're using it.

What we don't use

The short version of the whole project:

  • No advertising. No banners, no sponsored posts, no affiliate links.
  • No paid placement. No one can buy a review, a score or an M.
  • No trackers. No cookies, no pixels, no accounts, no personal information collected; only minimal, anonymous counts of visits and searches, listed in full in the privacy policy.
  • No stock photography. Every photograph on this site was taken by us, in this city.
  • No press dinners. We pay for what we eat and drink.

It's free to read, and nobody pays to be in it. That second part is the one that matters: it's the only arrangement under which the recommendations mean anything.

Words and pictures

All writing, photography, scores and the M List are © 2026 MUSEENYC. The MUSEENYC name and the M mark are ours. You're welcome to link to anything here or quote a line or two with credit; please don't republish whole pieces or scrape the site — the terms spell out where the line is.

Type

Headlines are set in Archivo Black by Omnibus-Type, licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. We serve it ourselves, so loading a page doesn't hand your address to anyone else. Body text uses whatever grotesque your device already has; essays are set in Georgia.

The map

  • Map imagery by Esri (Esri, HERE, Garmin), on the map page and on the small map under each review.
  • Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License.
  • Neighborhood center points were derived from OpenStreetMap data via Nominatim.
  • Walking tour maps are hosted on Google My Maps, and walking directions open in Google Maps. The routes and stops on them are ours.

Printable guides

Every walking tour has a printable guide, set in the same type as the site, so what you print matches what you read.
