Private guided walks

Put your phone away and follow someone who knows the way. One party at a time, never a group of strangers.

Why a private walk beats a group tour

Most walking tours in New York put you at the back of a crowd of thirty, following an umbrella, straining to hear a script recited for the hundredth time that week. The pace is set for the slowest person in the group, the stops are set by the company, and the one question you actually wanted to ask never gets asked.

A private walk is the opposite. It is only you, so the pace, the route and the questions are yours. Want to stop for coffee, linger in a bookshop, or skip the thing you do not care about? You can. Your guide handles the navigating, so you spend the walk looking up at the city instead of down at a map.

Why MUSEENYC: your guide is a licensed New York City Sightseeing Guide, which many people selling tours here are not, and also the person who writes this guide, so the walk comes with real opinions about where to eat and what is worth your time. You get photographs all day, of yourself in New York rather than selfies at arm’s length, and no tipping, because the price you agree is the price.

Licensed NYC Sightseeing Guide. Every tour is led by a licensed New York City Sightseeing Guide, who carries the license on the walk and will show it to you.

What you get

  • The pace, the questions and the stops are yours, because nobody else is on the walk.
  • Any MUSEENYC walking tour led in person, or a route built around what you actually want to see.
  • Your guide is your navigation, so nobody has to watch a map: you look up at the city instead.
  • We take the photographs, all day, as many as you want. Your guide is your photographer for the whole walk: ask at any moment, or just keep walking and get sent the ones you did not know were being taken.
  • You go home with real pictures of yourselves in New York instead of selfies held at arm’s length, in the spots worth standing in, taken by someone who knows where to stand and when the light is right.
  • Ask anything, all day. That is what a licensed guide is for.
  • Stops for coffee, a slice or a sit-down whenever you want them. This is a walk, not a march.

How to book it

Use the form below, or email us. We reply with availability, the price and what is included, in writing, and nothing is confirmed until you say yes. If the weather would ruin it we will tell you and move it.

The full terms, including cancellations, are in our terms. Booking this changes nothing about what we write on the rest of the site: nobody can pay to appear on MUSEENYC.

Common questions

How much is a private tour guide in New York?

We quote it in writing before you book, once we know the date, the length and how many of you there are, and there is nothing to pay to ask. Every walk is private, so the price is for your party rather than per seat on a group tour.

Is your guide actually licensed?

Yes. Guiding for hire in New York City requires a Sightseeing Guide license from the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, which means an exam and a renewal every two years. Plenty of people selling tours here do not hold one. Ours is carried on the walk and shown on request.

How long is a private walking tour, and how far do we walk?

Two to three hours is normal, and longer by arrangement. The pace is yours: we stop for coffee, a slice or a sit-down whenever you want, and if you tell us beforehand how far you can comfortably walk we plan the route around it.

How many people can come?

Solo, a couple, or your own small group. We take one party at a time and never join separate bookings together, so you are never walking with strangers.

Do you take photos of us?

All day, as many as you want. Your guide is your photographer for the whole walk: ask at any moment, or just keep walking and get sent the ones you never noticed being taken. They are sent afterwards and they are yours.

What happens if it rains?

If the weather would make the walk miserable we say so and move it rather than march you through it, and if we cancel for any reason you get a full refund or another date, your choice.

Do I need to tip the guide?

No. Tipping is never expected here and the price you agree is the price. If you loved it, a few words somewhere public is worth more to us than cash.
