Follow-me bike tours

Ride the city behind someone who knows the safe way through it, at your pace, with nobody else in the group.

Why ride it with someone who knows the way

A bike is the best way to see New York, and the most nerve-racking to work out alone. Which streets have a protected lane and which just have paint, how to get onto a bridge, where the greenway breaks off into traffic: none of it is obvious from a map, and finding out mid-junction is not how anyone wants to spend a holiday.

Following someone who knows takes all of that away. You ride behind your guide on protected lanes, greenways and quiet streets, stop wherever the view is worth it, and cover more of the city in an afternoon than you could walk in two days: along the Hudson, across the bridges into Brooklyn, around the parks.

Why MUSEENYC: it is private, so nobody sets the pace but you and you are never waiting on a group of strangers. Your guide is licensed, picks routes for calm rather than speed, and takes your photographs on the way. Bring your own bike or use Citi Bike, and we tell you exactly what to get before the day.

Licensed NYC Sightseeing Guide. Every tour is led by a licensed New York City Sightseeing Guide, who carries the license on the walk and will show it to you.

What you get

  • You follow the guide on protected lanes, greenways and quiet streets, with nobody else in the group.
  • Routes like the Hudson Greenway, the bridges into Brooklyn, or the park loops, with regular stops.
  • For riders who are comfortable on a bike and in traffic. Citi Bike or your own.
  • We take the photographs on the way, as many as you want. Stop and ask any time, or just ride and get sent the shots from the spots worth stopping for.
  • Every rider signs a waiver before setting off, and anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian to sign.

How to book it

Use the form below, or email us. We reply with availability, the price and what is included, in writing, and nothing is confirmed until you say yes. If the weather would ruin it we will tell you and move it.

The full terms, including cancellations, are in our terms. Booking this changes nothing about what we write on the rest of the site: nobody can pay to appear on MUSEENYC.

Common questions

Do I need my own bike?

No, but the bike is yours to arrange: most people use Citi Bike, which is the cheapest way to do it, and a day pass covers a ride like this. We tell you exactly what to get and where to pick it up before the day.

Is cycling in New York safe?

It is a lot calmer than it looks from the sidewalk if you know which streets to be on, which is the whole point of following someone who does. Routes stick to protected lanes, greenways and quiet streets, and you ride behind the guide rather than working it out at every junction.

How fit do I need to be?

Comfortable on a bike and comfortable in traffic. The pace is easy and there are regular stops. It is not a workout, but it is not a first ever bike ride either.

Do I have to wear a helmet?

Strongly recommended, and not required by law for adults in New York City. Bring one if you have one. Every rider signs a waiver before setting off, and anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian to sign for them.

What if it rains?

We move it. Wet roads, wet brakes and traffic are not a good combination, and a ride nobody enjoys is not worth running. If we cancel you get a full refund or another date, your choice.
