Arturo Schomburg spent his life collecting the proof that Black history had been written down, and sold the collection to the New York Public Library in 1926. It has been growing here ever since, on Malcolm X Boulevard.
The exhibitions are free and the reading rooms are open. Langston Hughes’s ashes are under the floor of the lobby, in a cosmogram you walk across.
