Dia Beacon holds art that just doesn’t fit in New York City. These are sculptures and installations too big, too heavy or too dependent on space and light for any museum in Manhattan, and you need to be out here, in the right room, with space around you, to really experience them.
The building is a former Nabisco box-printing factory on the banks of the Hudson, with acres of open floor under long rows of skylights. Richard Serra’s Torqued Ellipses are giant curving walls of steel that you walk into and around, and they change how your body feels in the room. Michael Heizer’s North, East, South, West drops you over the edge of deep geometric pits cut into the floor. Agnes Martin’s quiet, pale paintings hang in a long-term view of their own, and Dan Flavin’s fluorescent light works glow at the far ends of the galleries. Give it time. Nothing here rewards rushing.
What to know
It’s open Friday to Monday, 10am to 5pm from March through October and 10am to 4pm from November through February, and closed Tuesday to Thursday. General admission is $25.
The train from Grand Central takes about an hour and twenty minutes, and the museum is a short walk from Beacon station. Make a day of it: Main Street in Beacon has good lunch and coffee, and Storm King is across the river.
Going? Tell them MUSEENYC sent you. It's not a discount and there's nothing to redeem — we just want them to know where you heard it.
