Storm King is one of the best outdoor art installations in the world. The art is visually stunning, and the space is enormous, around 500 acres of hills, meadows and woodland at the foot of the mountains, so you never run out of things to walk toward.
The work is built for the land. Mark di Suvero’s steel pieces stand taller than the trees. Andy Goldsworthy’s Storm King Wall snakes through the woods, dips into a pond and climbs out the other side. Maya Lin’s Wavefield turns a whole field into rolling grass waves you can walk between. Richard Serra’s Schunnemunk Fork cuts across a slope in long plates of steel. None of it would make sense indoors, and seeing it with the sky and the hills behind it is the point.
What to know
Book a timed ticket in advance: $25 on weekdays and $28 on weekends, and more on peak fall weekends. It’s open 10am to 6pm every day except Tuesday, with last entry at 5pm, and it closes for part of the winter, so check the calendar.
The grounds are big. Wear good shoes, bring water, and consider renting a bike at the entrance to cover the far fields. Weekdays are much calmer than weekends, and fall is the most beautiful time to go.
