Untermyer Gardens is a beautiful escape, and it’s barely out of the city. A short train ride up the Hudson and you’re walking through one of the great gardens in America, often with hardly anyone around.
It was built for Samuel Untermyer, a lawyer who spent the early twentieth century turning his Yonkers estate into a showpiece. The heart of it is the Walled Garden, a Persian-style garden laid out with long water channels, mosaic paths, flower beds and a small amphitheater, all inside high stone walls. Past it are classical columns, a little Temple of Love on a rock outcrop with a waterfall below, and the Vista, a long staircase framed by cedars that runs down toward the river with the Palisades on the far side.
What to know
Entry is free and it’s open every day from 9am. Closing changes with the season: 6pm through November 1, then 4:30pm through early March, and later in summer. Last entry is half an hour before closing, and no pets are allowed. In winter the garden runs evening illuminations; check its site for the dates.
Bring water and good shoes, since the grounds run downhill toward the river, and take your time. It rewards wandering.
Going? Tell them MUSEENYC sent you. It's not a discount and there's nothing to redeem — we just want them to know where you heard it.
