Order the scones. Mary O’Halloran is from County Mayo and makes the soda bread to her mother’s recipe, and it comes out of the oven all through the morning rather than sitting in a case, which is the whole difference. Do not forget the butter and the jelly, and do not be shy with either. Lather it on.
Then eat it immediately. Straight from the oven is what you came for, and a scone that sits for ten minutes is a different and lesser thing.
Get there early. The line builds fast and it does not thin out, and they bake through it rather than ahead of it.
What to know
Early is the move, before the line. This is the bread shop on East 7th Street, which is a different address from the Mary O’s pub around the corner on Avenue A — same family, same soda bread, but if you have come for the scones, come here.
Going? Tell them MUSEENYC sent you. It's not a discount and there's nothing to redeem — we just want them to know where you heard it.
