Full of surprises, and it genuinely feels like an escape: hiking trails, walking paths, amazing views and real quiet. A forest inside the city.
Actual forest: tulip trees, valleys cut by glaciers, caves that Lenape people used, and a salt marsh that is the last natural one in Manhattan. You can get far enough in that you cannot hear a car, which is not true anywhere else on this island.
It is a subway ride from midtown and almost nobody from downtown has been.
What to know
Free. A train to Dyckman Street or 215th Street. Wear shoes you can climb in.
