Far enough out to feel like a different, unmistakably New York corner of the city, with an amazing view of the Statue of Liberty.
A short pier at the end of Coffey Street with the harbor open in front of it. She is out there facing you, front on, closer than from anywhere else you can reach on foot, and there is no ticket, no ferry and usually no crowd.
The pier sits on the ground where Fort Defiance stood during the Revolution, firing at British ships in the same water.
What to know
Free and open. Sunset is the hour, and it is a fifteen-minute walk from the Red Hook ferry stop.
