Manhattan has Central Park, Brooklyn has Prospect Park, and the Bronx has Van Cortlandt. Far enough out, but not too far, to feel like a proper escape.
Ridges, forest, a lake, cross-country trails that high schools across the city have been running for a century, and a 1748 stone house that is the oldest building in the borough.
The 1 train ends at its edge, which makes it the easiest big wilderness in the city to reach.
