It’s always worth visiting. The architecture and the engineering are extraordinary, the wooden slats underfoot are unlike any other crossing in the city, and the views earn every photograph taken of them.

What to know

You will also encounter some of the worst crowds in New York. Go off-peak — early morning is close to empty and the same bridge entirely. Walk it Brooklyn to Manhattan so the skyline is in front of you rather than behind. The pedestrian promenade now has a separated bike lane, which has made the walk far less fraught.
