Go when
Late afternoon

A lively park, in the best sense: people actually use it.

Fifth Avenue has to bend around this park because the rock underneath it would not move. Climb it and there is a cast-iron watchtower from 1856, the only one of its kind left standing in the country, restored and put back on the hill a few years ago.

The amphitheatre below runs free events all summer.

What to know

Free. The climb to the tower is steep and worth it.
