Things to Do in NYC in October 2026
October is New York's best month. Comic Con, Open House New York, the Halloween parade, the weather, and what has changed this year.

October is the best month to be in New York. The heat is gone, the light is golden, the leaves turn late in the month, and the calendar is packed. In 2026 it ends with the Village Halloween Parade on a Saturday, followed the next morning by the NYC Marathon.
Here’s what’s on, week by week, and what to skip.
The big dates, October 2026
- October 8 to 11: New York Comic Con at the Javits Center. The costumes spill onto the streets of Hell’s Kitchen all weekend, badge or not.
- October 15 to 18: NYC Wine & Food Festival, mostly at the Seaport in Lower Manhattan. Ticketed tastings and dinners.
- October 16 to 18: Open House New York Weekend. Hundreds of buildings that are normally closed open their doors, most of them free. The best architecture weekend of the year. Some sites need advance reservations, and they go fast.
- Late October: the Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade in the East Village, usually on a Sunday afternoon. Free to watch. Check this year’s date.
- Saturday, October 31: the Village Halloween Parade, 7pm on Sixth Avenue, and anyone in costume can march for free. Our Halloween parade guide has the route, where to stand and how to join.
What’s different this year
- The Harlem Meer pumpkin flotilla is off in 2026. Central Park’s floating jack-o’-lanterns became too popular for the space, and the Conservancy has paused it while it works on a new Halloween event.
- Halloween is a Saturday. Expect the biggest parade crowd in years, and a busy night everywhere downtown.
- The NYC Marathon is the next morning, Sunday, November 1. If you’re here for both, see our marathon spectator guide.
Things to do in NYC in October
See the leaves
Color in the city peaks late: the forecast peak this year is around November 1. The last week of October is when the parks start to turn properly. Our NYC fall foliage 2026 guide has where to go and the marathon-day plan. For a walk that’s all trees and water, try Central Park’s wild north or Prospect Park’s Ravine.
Catch the last garden weekends
The East Village’s community gardens close for the season on October 31. The first half of the month is your last chance to walk into them this year, and they’re at their fullest. Our East Village community gardens guide has every garden’s hours, and the gardens walking tour links thirteen of them into one Sunday afternoon.
Walk somewhere
October is walking weather. Pick a route and go:
- Two Bridges: the Brooklyn Bridge out and the Manhattan Bridge back.
- The Hudson Greenway by Citi Bike: the Battery to the George Washington Bridge, then into the Bronx to eat.
- Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO and Vinegar Hill: the Promenade at sunset.
Go to a museum on a free night
October evenings are made for it. Our free and pay-what-you-wish museums guide has every free night this season.
Leave the city for an evening
The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze in the Hudson Valley is open every night in October, with more than 7,000 hand-carved pumpkins. It’s ticketed and a train ride north, and weekend nights sell out.
The weather, and what to pack
October starts mild and ends cold. Early in the month, expect highs in the 60s°F. By Halloween, the 50s, with evenings that drop further. Rain comes in short bursts rather than whole days.
- Layers: a sweater and a light jacket cover almost every day.
- Real shoes: you’ll walk more than you plan, because the weather lets you.
- An evening layer for anything outdoors after dark, especially the parade.
What to skip in October
- Weekend afternoons at the famous spots. October is peak season, and Saturday afternoons at the Met, the High Line and the south end of Central Park are crowded. Go early.
- Booking the Halloween parade weekend late. With the parade on Saturday and the marathon on Sunday, hotels fill up. If you’re coming for them, book now.
Plan the rest of your trip
- Where to stay: where to stay in NYC, by the kind of trip you are taking.
- Where to eat: cheap eats in NYC, or the full food section.
- The views: the best views in NYC, several of them free.
- Staying into November? Things to do in NYC in November 2026.
- By borough: things to do in Manhattan and things to do in Brooklyn.
