Not a reason to come uptown on its own, but if you are anywhere nearby, walk it.
Finished in 1848 to carry the Croton Aqueduct over the Harlem River, closed for forty years, and reopened as a footbridge. It is the oldest bridge in the city and it still looks like a Roman aqueduct because that is exactly what it was copying.
Walk it and you are in the Bronx in about four minutes, high above the river, usually alone.
What to know
Free. Closes at dusk. Highbridge Park on the Manhattan side has the water tower.
